About Duke

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes

Duke is eager to meet new people and is polite around other dogs. He is currently in a foster home with 2 other dogs, 5 cats and 3 kids. He has adjusted beautifully to the hectic family life. He has had many encounters with other dogs during his time in foster care and will be a great companion for an older, settled dog. He does not enjoy puppy energy as he gets frustrated and barks a great deal when others are excited or playing. Duke has bilateral hip dysplasia and can become very frustrated when others play or get excited. He is just not able to play and therefore, likes to stop all others. He is happy to stay close with his family, not running and rough housing. Duke is a handsome black and tan German Shepherd with brown eyes. He weighs about 70-75 lbs. and his guestimated DOB is March 2002.

Duke has separation anxiety and has improved 10-fold while in foster care. He is not a dog that can be secured in a crate and even has a tough time being on the other side of a gate or door from his people. We have made great strides with this but this behavior will be something any potential adopter will need to continue working on with him in order for him to do his best. He does have full house privileges and he does fine with that. If you are outside the home and in his view playing or just getting the mail, this is when he is the most vocal and agitated. Duke is a very vocal dog who likes to moan and mumble about many things. Any excitement or horsing around can lead Duke into barking mode where he must be reminded to lie down. He needs frequent reminders to lie down and keep out of others business. This direction has worked very well for Duke. He has more energy then his body allows him to burn off and often it comes out in barking and whining. He has wonderful house manners and knows many basic obedience commands.

Regardless of his poor hips and his anxiety issues, this boy is a gem. He will do terrific with someone who is looking for a gorgeous companion who enjoys hanging out at home. Duke has good days and bad days with stairs in his Foster Home. He is a big boy and over time stairs will become more challenging for him. Give the boy a pillow and some attention, however, and he is happy happy happy! His tail speaks volumes. Duke is a dedicated, loving, intelligent German Shepherd with some physical challenges that prevent him from being the active hard working dog he truly could be. This boy is ready to find a family who will love him and understand his limitations and special needs.
